Meet Erik Shoji, the three-time Olympian who's shaking up the volleyball world – and the world beyond it! In a heartfelt Instagram post, Shoji, a 35-year-old powerhouse and former Berlin volleyball team player, publicly declared he's queer.
"It's a mix of fear and feelin' free," said Shoji, that Olympic bronze medalist, giving us the lowdown in a video. "Personal acceptance takes some time – and it took a while. I'm still workin' on it every day," he added, the libero who graced the Berlin court from 2014 to 2016. "But, I've never felt stronger, more confident, and secure than I do now."
Shoji aims to be a beacon for others, encouraging them to embrace their true selves.
Cheers Echo Across the Court
There's a wave of support flowing in from the U.S. national team alumni. "[I] love you, E - and the incredible person you are, were, and always will be," wrote Cody Kessel, another Volleys vet. Even Berliner Benjamin Patch, who also came out as queer in 2020, joined the chorus: "We're always with you!"
The U.S. Volleyball Association pressed the thumbs-up button hard, proclaiming: "Proud of you, Erik. Your courage, authenticity, and leading – on and off the court – continues to inspire us all!"

Shoji's got big plans for the upcoming season. He's gearing up to play for the Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, a powerhouse team in Poland's first division. And, get this – he's not only in Poland, but he's also part of the U.S. extended squad for the Nations League and holds the captain's armband. Talk about a power move!
