VW keeps Cupra Born production in Zwickau - ID.3 stays longer - Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant expands electric vehicle production beyond original plans
Volkswagen has confirmed that its Zwickau plant will keep producing a wider range of electric vehicles than originally planned. The decision comes as part of the company’s updated capacity strategy for its two largest German factories. Among the key changes, the Cupra Born will remain in production at the site.
The announcement also marks the 35th anniversary of Volkswagen Saxony, with the facility maintaining its role as a multi-brand manufacturing hub employing around 8,500 people.
The Zwickau factory currently builds six all-electric models, including the ID.3. Production of the ID.3 had been set to end earlier but will now continue beyond the initial timeline. This extension reflects Volkswagen’s broader shift in capacity planning for its major German sites.
Gregor Schulz has taken over as the plant’s new manager. Under his leadership, the facility will keep operating as a key production centre for multiple brands. Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Panter, highlighted the plant’s importance, calling it a beacon for eastern Germany.
The updated plans ensure the Zwickau site remains a central part of Volkswagen’s electric vehicle strategy. The factory will also maintain its workforce of approximately 8,500 employees, securing jobs in the region.
The decision secures the future of the Zwickau plant as a major electric vehicle production site. With the Cupra Born and ID.3 lines extended, the facility will continue serving multiple brands. The move also reinforces Volkswagen’s commitment to its German manufacturing base.
