VW Supervisor Pötsch Named Honorary Citizen of Wolfsburg - Volkswagen’s Crisis Leader Honored as Wolfsburg’s Honorary Citizen
Hans Dieter Pötsch, chairman of Volkswagen’s supervisory board, has received Wolfsburg’s highest honour. The city named him an honorary citizen in recognition of his long-standing contributions. His leadership qualities helped steer the company through some of its toughest challenges.
Pötsch began his career as a business economist before joining Volkswagen. He spent twelve years as the company’s chief financial officer, shaping its financial direction. In autumn 2015, he took over as chairman of the supervisory board.
His leadership became crucial during the diesel emissions scandal that same year. He assumed dual roles, overseeing both Volkswagen AG and Porsche SE. This move stabilised the group and set the stage for a major restructuring effort.
Beyond crisis management, Pötsch played a key part in Volkswagen’s long-term transformation. His financial strategies funded the shift toward electric mobility and digitalisation. Earlier in his career, he also protected Volkswagen from a takeover attempt by Porsche AG.
Even after stepping back from day-to-day operations, his influence remained strong. The company relied on his steady hand during periods of uncertainty.
The honorary citizenship reflects Pötsch’s lasting impact on Wolfsburg and Volkswagen. His financial expertise and crisis leadership helped reshape the automaker’s future. The city’s decision highlights his role in securing Volkswagen’s stability and growth.
