Volga District's first arrhythmology forum advances cardiac care innovation
The first arrhythmology forum for the Volga Federal District wrapped up in Nizhny Novgorod this week. Organised by regional and federal health bodies, the event brought together over 450 medical specialists to tackle cardiovascular diseases, with a particular focus on sudden cardiac death.
The forum was a joint effort by institutions such as the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Ministry of Health and the All-Russian Scientific Society of Clinical Electrophysiology, Arrhythmology, and Cardiac Pacing. Participants discussed key areas like clinical arrhythmology, sports cardiology, and the role of artificial intelligence in improving patient care.
A hands-on seminar formed part of the programme, where doctors practised on 3D heart models and used advanced X-ray contrast simulators. These tools aimed to sharpen skills in diagnosing and treating rhythm disorders. By the end of 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod region had already carried out more than 1,600 arrhythmia surgeries. It also surpassed the national average for implanting antiarrhythmic devices. Alongside the forum, the region unveiled new healthcare facilities, including an outpatient monitoring centre and modern primary vascular units. This event follows a wider trend across Russia. Since 2023, around 45 hospitals and clinics have hosted similar interdisciplinary forums on cardiac arrhythmias. The Central Federal District (Moscow region) and Northwestern Federal District (St. Petersburg) have been the most active, accounting for over 60% of these gatherings.
The forum highlighted the region's progress in treating heart rhythm disorders. With new facilities and ongoing training, medical teams in Nizhny Novgorod are better equipped to handle complex cardiovascular cases. The event also reinforced collaboration between different specialties in reducing sudden cardiac deaths.
