Mount Vesuvius Wildfire Continues to Rage in Italy

A wildfire in Vesuvius National Park, Italy, has been burning for over 24 hours, spreading significantly and affecting a substantial area of the park. The blaze, which started on August 5, has grown to nearly two miles (3 km) wide, with smoke visible from Naples and impacting the area between Pompeii and Torre del Greco.

Current Status

All hiking routes on the volcano have been closed for safety reasons and to facilitate firefighting efforts. Firefighters are actively battling the fire with ground teams and aerial support from Canadair planes. Reinforcements have been deployed from other regions in Italy.

The fire affects forests and local agriculture, and the firefighting efforts are complicated by a heatwave with high temperatures expected in the coming days. Despite the fire, the Pompeii archaeological site remains open to tourists, but the Vesuvius National Park trails are closed until further notice.

Wildfires Across Europe

Meanwhile, in Scotland, Arthur's Seat erupted in flames on Sunday. In Canada, Nova Scotia officials have banned hiking and camping in the woods to reduce wildfire risk. Furthermore, in France, officials are battling the country's largest wildfire in 75 years, which has resulted in one death and multiple injuries.

The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will likely be provided as firefighting efforts continue. As of August 2025, the hiking trails on Mount Vesuvius remain closed to tourists due to the ongoing wildfire.
