After a tumultuous tenure with the Phoenix Suns that ended in a first-round playoff sweep, Frank Vogel is back in the NBA coaching ranks. The Dallas Mavericks have announced that Vogel will join Jason Kidd's staff as an associate head coach, marking a reunion with the man who was his assistant coach during their championship-winning season with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

Vogel's coaching career began in 2013-14, immediately after his retirement as a player, with the Indiana Pacers. In his first season, he led the team to consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference finals, where they unfortunately lost to LeBron James and the Miami Heat both years. Vogel's success with the Pacers earned him a move to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2016.

In LA, Vogel led the team to an NBA title in the "bubble" in Florida in 2020, a season that also saw him win the NBA Coach of the Year award. However, two years later, Vogel was fired by the Lakers, marking the end of a successful but short-lived tenure.

Following his departure from the Lakers, Vogel took a year-long hiatus before being hired as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns for the 2023-2024 season. Despite achieving a respectable 49-33 record during his tenure, the Suns were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading to Vogel's firing by the Suns' ownership.

In October 2024, Vogel was hired as a consultant to Jason Kidd, who is the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. This role provided Vogel with an opportunity to work with Kidd once again, and it seems that the two have now decided to take their partnership to the next level.

As of July 2025, Vogel has officially joined the Dallas Mavericks as an associate head coach under Jason Kidd. This move marks a reunion with Kidd, who was an assistant coach under Vogel during their championship-winning season with the Lakers. Some reports also refer to Vogel as the lead assistant coach in this role.

The Mavericks are undergoing significant changes after trading away Luka Doncic and drafting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick. Vogel brings significant experience and a championship pedigree to the team, which is sure to be beneficial as they navigate these changes.

Both Vogel and Kidd are 52 years old, and the tandem has already proven their ability to work together successfully. With Vogel's experience as a head coach and Kidd's experience as a player and coach, the Mavericks are poised for a strong season ahead.
