Vodacom's R450M Western Cape push transforms schools and disaster relief
Vodacom South Africa is expanding its use of technology to drive positive change in the Western Cape. The company has rolled out new training programmes, upgraded schools, and invested heavily in disaster relief and infrastructure this year.
Their latest initiatives include digital skills training for farmers, support for education centres, and funding for healthcare partnerships. This financial year, Vodacom donated R1.1 million to disaster relief efforts in the Western Cape. The funding came as part of broader community support during the 2024/25 period.
The company also invested R450 million to improve network coverage, capacity, and reliability across the province. These upgrades aim to boost connectivity for residents and businesses.
In education, Vodacom has equipped Diazville High School with a Virtual Classroom solution and a Coding and Robotics programme. The company's Youth Academy has now graduated over 170 young people from underprivileged backgrounds, giving them essential computer skills.
For female farmers, Vodacom recently provided ICT training to 40 participants in the Western Cape. Since 2017, they have also helped 55 survivors of gender-based violence gain digital skills.
The Vodacom Foundation partnered with the Smile Foundation to support Smile Week at Tygerberg Hospital. Additionally, the company maintains four Schools of Excellence and four Early Childhood Development centres in the region, though exact numbers for broader initiatives remain undisclosed.
A spokesperson for Vodacom emphasised their commitment to using technology as a tool for social good. The goal is to create a more inclusive and sustainable future for the province through targeted investments. Vodacom's latest projects in the Western Cape cover education, disaster response, and digital empowerment. The R450 million network upgrade and ongoing training programmes aim to strengthen local communities.
Further partnerships, like the one with Tygerberg Hospital, show how technology is being directed toward healthcare and social support in the region.
