Vladivostok's Surfing Community Plans Growth at Open Forum

An open meeting titled An Open Conversation About Surfing took place last week at Vladivostok’s Russia National Center. The event drew around 40 surfing enthusiasts and professionals from Primorsky Krai. Led by Pedro Barbadu, head coach of the Russian national surfing team, and Irina Barbadu, president of the National Association of Surfing Coaches, Athletes, and Specialists, the discussion focused on growing the sport in the region.

Pedro Barbadu shared his own surfing career, which began at 16 and ended at 31 after winning two championships. He stressed the importance of setting step-by-step goals for local athletes. According to him, consistent effort could help surfers from Primorsky Krai reach international standards.

Barbadu also highlighted the value of competitions in sharpening both technical and mental skills. He encouraged surfers to focus on personal progress rather than comparing themselves to others. Many attendees showed keen interest in developing surfing infrastructure and opportunities in the area. Irina Barbadu noted that Russia already hosts a network of surfing events. Competitions are held in Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg, with an upcoming championship scheduled for Sakhalin in September.

The meeting provided a platform for local surfers to discuss growth strategies. Pedro Barbadu’s insights on training and competition could shape future development in Primorsky Krai. With existing events and rising interest, the region may see further expansion in surfing activities.
