Vladivostok battles black ice as freezing temperatures and rain create travel hazards

Vladivostok is bracing for hazardous conditions as freezing temperatures and shifting winds threaten to create black ice. Overnight, city crews worked to treat roads and pavements with anti-icing agents ahead of Saturday’s forecasted rain and slippery surfaces. Authorities are now warning residents to take extra care when travelling.

The Urban Maintenance Agency deployed nearly 200 workers on Friday to clear sidewalks and prepare for worsening conditions. Key routes, including Admiral Gorshkov Street, Primorskaya Street and 2nd Poselkovaya Street, were among those treated with de-icing chemicals.

Weather forecasts predict variable cloud cover on Saturday, with light rain expected at times. Temperatures will hover between +3 and +5 °C, while winds will strengthen from a moderate southerly breeze in the morning to powerful gusts by the afternoon. These conditions raise the risk of black ice forming on untreated surfaces.

Operations will continue throughout the day, with teams monitoring roads and sidewalks. Despite the preparations, officials have stressed that both pedestrians and drivers must remain vigilant due to the heightened danger of slips and skids.

The city’s efforts to combat icy conditions will stay in place through Saturday, but residents are still advised to adjust travel plans where possible. With rain, gusty winds and near-freezing temperatures, the risk of accidents remains high on untreated or partially treated areas.
