Jonas Vingegaard Retains Tour de France Title, Remains Top Contender in Grand Tours

Jonas Vingegaard has once again proven his dominance in the world of cycling, successfully defending his Tour de France title in 2023. The Danish rider outperformed Tadej Pogacar, the defending champion, by a significant margin, securing not only the overall yellow jersey but also two stage wins and the polka dot mountains jersey.

In the 2022 Tour de France, Vingegaard's performance was particularly impressive, especially on summit finishes and time trials. His victory marked a shift in dominance in the race, making him the second Danish winner after Bjarne Riis in 1996.

Despite some setbacks in 2024, Vingegaard has shown remarkable resilience, bouncing back to remain among the elite contenders in Grand Tours. However, Pogacar has recently edged out Vingegaard in some races following his recovery from injury, with Vingegaard finishing as runner-up behind Pogacar in two consecutive Tours after 2022.

The hardest stages of the Tour de France are still ahead, but Vingegaard's team, Visma-Lease a Bike, have been the most aggressive and attacking team in the first 10 days. They have shown great determination, with Vingegaard's vibes within the team being good, but their focus remains on winning, not just having good dinner table chat.

Sepp Kuss, a teammate of Jonas Vingegaard, was just as upbeat about their chances. Kuss acknowledged that it's a big deficit but emphasized that anything can happen in bike racing. Matteo Jorgenson, Visma's second man in the GC fight, expressed positivity about Vingegaard's performance, proud of his fight in the race.

In the recent stages, Vingegaard's deficit to Pogacar grew from 3:31 to 4:07, making a third Tour title for Vingegaard look a distant possibility. However, Visma-Lease a Bike have declared that the Tour de France is not over. Yesterday was a tough day for Visma, but they managed to come back today. Vingegaard's condition appears to be better than ever, as indicated by his speed on the climb to Peyragudes, where he maintained an average speed of 27.7kph.

Looking forward, Vingegaard's focus has shifted somewhat towards the Vuelta a España, where he is currently seen as a favorite. With Pogacar and Primož Roglič not participating, his chances of winning major tours remain very strong.
