Visitors are required to vacate Sochi beaches due to the potential threat posed by unsupervised drones

The city of Sochi, Russia, has issued an evacuation notice on August 8, 2025, following a reported drone threat. The Operational Headquarters of the Krasnodar Territory made the announcement, advising visitors and residents to proceed to shelters.

The evacuation is a response to a "Drone Danger" situation in Sochi, which stems from recent Ukrainian drone attacks on critical sites, including an oil depot near the city. On August 3, debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank at the oil depot, causing a major fire that required over 120 firefighters to extinguish. Although there were no casualties reported in Sochi from this incident, it prompted temporary suspension of flights at Sochi’s airport and raised alerts across the city due to the risk of further strikes.

In response to the ongoing Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian energy and defense infrastructure, Russian defenses have intercepted many drones, but some still caused damage, including the fire near Sochi’s oil depot. Ukrainian forces appear to have successfully penetrated southern Russia’s air defenses, enabling these strikes to reach deep into Russian territory.

To ensure public safety, the local government advises residents and visitors to take the following actions:

  1. Monitor official updates from Sochi city authorities and Russian civil aviation for any changes to alert levels or flight operations.
  2. Follow any civil defense instructions issued in response to drone threat signals.
  3. Avoid unnecessary travel near critical infrastructure sites such as oil depots and the airport.
  4. Stay indoors or in designated safe areas during drone danger alerts to minimize risk from potential strikes or debris.

The local government has stated the situation is under control, with infrastructure operating normally and emergency services actively managing risks and assisting those affected. Continued vigilance is recommended due to the ongoing nature of these cross-border strikes.

In addition, the authorities in Sochi have requested citizens not to record or publish on social media the work of air defense, drone and debris footage, and actions of special services and protected objects.
