Wanting to ease the burden on its asylum system, Lower Saxony is pushing for visa requirements for individuals from Colombia. Interior Minister Daniela Behrens expressed her discontent with the current situation, stating, "We ought to do everything possible to alleviate our asylum system and simultaneously encourage the immigration of skilled workers."
The high number of Colombians seeking asylum, combined with a low recognition rate for refugees from the South American country, is causing strain. Of the 1640 asylum applications from Colombia this year, only 0.43 percent were successful. Despite this, Lower Saxony welcomes Colombians as skilled workers, offering them the chance to elevate their language skills and qualify for occupations equivalent to those in Germany.
Behrens has written to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) requesting the reintroduction of the visa requirement. "Germany relies on immigration and workers from abroad," says Behrens. "Colombians are valuable additions to our workforce."
The small Lower Saxon village of Wilstedt made headlines at the end of last year, as it fought against the deportation of Colombian caregivers due to rejected asylum applications, potentially threatening the operation of a dementia patients' facility.
