Visa Delay Prevents Gustav Berggren from Debuting for the Red Bulls
New York Red Bulls Await P-1 Visa Approval for Gustav Berggren
After signing a 3.5-year deal with the New York Red Bulls on July 23, Gustav Berggren has been eagerly awaiting the approval of his P-1 visa. The process, however, has taken longer than expected, leaving the Red Bulls without their new midfielder for the initial games of the season.
Berggren, who was signed to replace Felipe Carballo, arrived from Poland's RKS Raków, where he spent the last three seasons. During his tenure, he won a league title in the 2022-23 season, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists across 105 appearances.
The MLS transfer window closes on August 21, and fortunately for the Red Bulls, Berggren's visa was approved just in time. However, as of Monday, there is no estimated timetable for when the visa issue will be resolved, leaving the team in a bit of limbo.
Meanwhile, the Red Bulls are also in talks with former German international Timo Werner, adding to the anticipation surrounding the team's roster.
On the other side of the MLS, Son Heung-min made his debut for LAFC on Sunday night, signing a deal that includes an option for the 2029 season. The Tottenham Hotspur legend joined the team after a successful stint with the South Korean national team.
As Berggren's visa situation unfolds, the Red Bulls are optimistic that he will be able to suit up for the upcoming match against Charlotte FC in North Carolina on August 24, 2025. Fans eagerly await the arrival of the Swedish midfielder, who promises to bring a unique skill set to the team.
