Virginia Narrows in on Pivotal Off-Year Elections: Three Contests to Keep an Eye On

Virginia's political landscape is shaping up for a significant battle over gun rights, as the state prepares for its upcoming election day 2024. The race to replace Governor Glenn Youngkin, a staunch defender of gun owners' rights, is particularly noteworthy.

The difference between the Republican and Democrat candidates vying for the governorship is stark when it comes to defending the rights of law-abiding gun owners. On one side, we have Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R), a strong advocate for gun rights, who has served in the U.S. Marine Corps and produced campaign material depicting her holding an AR-15. On the other side, we have Abigail Spanberger (D), known for her anti-gun stance, campaigning with gun-ban extremist groups and repeating anti-gun rhetoric.

Gov. Youngkin has vetoed more than 50 anti-gun bills during his tenure, and if Spanberger had been governor, these vetoes might not have occurred. In contrast, Spanberger supports banning semi-automatics and limiting magazine capacity.

In the race for Virginia Attorney General, incumbent Jason Miyares, endorsed by the NRA-PVF, has consistently voted to support law-abiding gun owners. His Democrat opponent, Jay Jones, a former state delegate and former Washington, D.C. assistant attorney general, has yet to be determined. However, Miyares recently wrote to the U.S. Supreme Court to support the right to keep and bear arms outside the home in the case of NYSRPA v. Bruen, reversing the position of his predecessor.

The election day to determine the new governor is Nov. 4. As the political landscape becomes clearer in other races, many candidates are yet to be determined, and decisions about involvement will be made. To get more involved in defending freedom, visit nraila.org/grassroots.

President Trump has been working to protect and strengthen the Second Amendment, and this year, Virginia, home of NRA Headquarters, could see a shift in key seats of power. Defenders of freedom must remain vigilant, as the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

As the election day approaches, election day alerts about critical races in Virginia will be provided. It is crucial for Virginia residents to stand and fight for their rights, ensuring that their voices are heard in the battle over gun rights.
