Viral video sparks confusion over Alexander Volkov's alleged fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov
A viral video recently caused confusion by showing a fighter who looked like UFC heavyweight Alexander Volkov battling Khabib Nurmagomedov. The clip actually featured Yuri Ilyin, a former student of Volkov, competing in a different weight class. Volkov himself stepped in to clarify the mix-up.
The misunderstanding began when footage surfaced of a bout resembling Volkov against Nurmagomedov. In reality, the fighter was Yuri Ilyin, who once trained under Volkov. The match took place at a tournament where both Ilyin and Volkov participated—but in separate divisions.
Volkov, who competed at around 110–120 kg during his UFC career, never fought at 90 kg, the weight class shown in the video. Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, was active in the 70 kg category. No records link Volkov to Ilyin's development at that weight, as Ilyin now trains independently in powerlifting and strongman events.
The two athletes never crossed paths in competition due to their differing weight classes. Volkov's clarification put an end to speculation about his involvement in the bout.
The video's confusion stemmed from a case of mistaken identity, with Ilyin's appearance resembling his former coach. Volkov's statement confirmed the facts: he never fought Nurmagomedov, and Ilyin's bout was unrelated to his own career. The incident highlights how easily misinformation can spread without verification.
