Violent Incident in Berlin-Köpenick: "Damn the Red Cross" (representing the left political spectrum)

Informal Rewrite:

Last year, Max T. had a harrowing experience at a late-night snack bar in Koepenick. Fresh from a concert with pals, he found himself in the middle of a disturbing ordeal.

Two lads, Hannes M. and Maxim G., are currently on trial for attacking T. with a "dangerous tool" and subjecting him to "life-threatening treatment." The troubling incident started when they allegedly hurled insults at T. and his gang, calling themselves "Nazis." The trial for these two began on Tuesday.

At the snack bar on Bahnhofstraße, the friend group met up with M. and G., who verbally attacked the group with comments like "You left-wing puppies, we’ll kick you out of Koepenick" and crude remarks. Following their verbal abuse, the duo reportedly deliberately bumped into a group of black people, which G. called a "collision." When T. inquired about it, the situation escalated. T. recounted being spat upon by one of the men and being taunted, "You always want to punch Nazis, why don’t you do it when you get the chance?"

After the attack, a couple of federal criminal police officers intervened with pepper spray. T. sustained head injuries with glass shards extracted at the hospital and a concussion. He continues to receive therapeutic treatment. Confused about why the assailants targeted him and his friends as "left-wing," T. stated, "I guess because of our long hair."

It seems the notoriety of a right-wing youth group is expanding, even in Treptow-Köpenick.

The defendants, Hannes M. and Maxim G., confessed to assaulting T., but G. argued that he was attacked first. Feeling enraged by the "left-right thing" and believing he had been incorrectly labeled as a Nazi, he also admitted to consuming alcohol and speed before encountering the group. B. also claimed to be under the influence of alcohol and amphetamines at the time of the encounter.

Around the crime scene lies the headquarters of the far-right "Homeland" party (formerly NPD), where recently, the neo-Nazi rapper "Kavalier" and right-wing rock band Flak performed. The Berlin Register reported 976 instances of right-wing violence in Treptow-Köpenick last year, an increase of 116% compared to 2023. Physical and verbal attacks reached a new high. "In Treptow-Köpenick, the presence of a right-wing youth scene is becoming more prevalent. Anti-fascists are increasingly becoming targets. The hostility towards political opponents has escalated the most," the organization announced as part of its 2024 annual review.
