Violent gusts and drifting sand engulf the heart of Weiden
In the heart of the city, the Lower Market's sand square has become a source of contention for the local authorities. The latest proposal by CSU city councilor Hans Sperrer, suggesting the renovation of the sand court and the reintroduction of a canalized city stream, has yet to yield any fruitful results.
Sperrer's plan involves making the stream visible again and leading it "under glass" through the sand square. However, the proposals presented by the administration have failed to win over the CSU city council fraction, with opinions within the committee differing regarding further funds for the 2019 budget and the use of water-permeable stones to make the square dust-free.
The dust problem at the Lower Market has been a long-standing issue, attributed to a lack of ventilation, water shortage, dogs relieving themselves, and wheels chaining to trees. The sand square's dust has been causing concern for the CSU faction, as it ends up on the plates and in the glasses of guests.
Josef-Johann Wieder, a member of the CSU fraction, has demanded relief from the dust issue at the Lower Market. However, the SPD does not support this proposal due to the significant cost involved. The deputy SPD faction leader has criticized the CSU for making a fuss with dramatic words and not seeing a need for action regarding the sand square.
The SPD members do not acknowledge a dust problem at the Lower Market and believe it is the responsibility of innkeepers to protect their guests. In contrast, Reinhold Wildenauer, another CSU member, advocates for an "open city stream" in the Lower Market. He has also made a demand to "keep the trees" in the Lower Market.
The committee has agreed on the need to protect the root system of the limes with "tree discs" and to install stands for wheels and charging stations for e-bikes. However, the cost of implementing an "open city stream" in the Lower Market would be significant, a factor that has not been overlooked by the CSU.
Meanwhile, other issues have surfaced in the city. A convicted terrorist was discovered to be residing in Tirschenreuth since 2022, causing concern among the residents. Elsewhere, a burned-out car with a body in the driver's seat was found near Neunburg vorm Wald, and the identity of the deceased has since been confirmed.
In a separate incident, a driver was found to be driving without a license during a police control. These events have served as a reminder that while the sand square's renovation may be a pressing issue for the CSU, they are not the only concerns facing the city.
