But what can I do? So, let's get this over with, with a dash of fake hope.

Donald Trump, the do-er that he is, has found a solution to the escalating chaos in Los Angeles: he escalates further. Splendid. All he's managed to do is launch a massive advertising campaign for his biggest adversary.

Compared to Gavin Newsom’s school president-like appearance, the U.S. President seems like a clumsy high school bully these days, trying to hide his lack of leadership with reflexive brutality. Although Trump has now realized that he has shot himself in the foot, he can't turn back.

Outside the U.S., the name of the California governor was only known to connoisseurs until a few days ago. Now it's hashtag-worthy. Thanks to clips like this:

Ouch. Yes, that man has MAGA nightmare potential: handsome family man, gifted orator, reformed alcoholic. The stuff of winning stories. The 57-year-old sends unmistakable Kennedy vibes, embodies the old democratic ideal like no one else currently does. Sure, it's still early, facades are crumbling. But I advise you: Remember this name. It will be important. At the latest by 2028.

Turning Point After the Turning Point?

By the way, revolution. Something similar is suggested by a basic paper by some SPD members, which is available to stern. This "manifesto" has some substance to it. Prominent Social Democrats, such as former faction leader Rolf Mützenich, are calling for a turning point after the turning point: talks with Russia, disarmament initiatives, a halt to the deployment of new US missiles.

My Berlin colleagues will tell you more about this in the new episode of the "5-Minute Talk" podcast. Please follow this link:

Happy 420th, Idefix!

As the strongest of all Gauls would say: "They're nuts, those Germans!" And his faithful companion would answer: Well, nothing. Idefix may outsmart his wild boar-crazy master in cleverness, but he can't speak.

He probably won't learn to speak by the time he's 60, which is how old he is today. Happy birthday, tiger! You're looking good for 420!

He first appeared in March 1965, in Asterix and Obelix's sixth adventure, on their Tour de France. Back then, he still had a stylish mop of hair:

But today is the day to celebrate the cuddliest of all Frenchmen - with a deluxe edition of his debut and the eighth comic book of "Idefix and the Unyielding".

For me, he clearly outshines all other comic animal competitors: Snoopy, Pluto, Scooby-Doo, and especially Tintin, that cheap gossip! I calm down.

Where Asterix, Obelix, and Idefix are heading this fall, you can read here. Spoiler: I wouldn't mind.

Today's Events

  • Poland's parliament is holding an extraordinary session to vote on the vote of confidence in Prime Minister Donald Tusk. After the victory of the right-wing conservative Karol Nawrocki in the presidential election, the still pro-European government is under pressure.
  • The Federal Chancellor is receiving Danish Prime Minister Jette Frederiksen. The main topics will be migration issues (which our neighbors answer very differently) and Ukraine.
  • And one more look into the darkness: Tonight, the strawberry moon will be in the sky. That's what the full moon in June is called. Even though our satellite is quite far away at the moment, it will appear particularly large shortly after sunset.

Eastern Wisdom

I really tried, but K-Pop is just not my thing. That's bad. I can't escape the noise in my ears in Seoul. Every screen, every skyscraper, every snack bar has the faces of these superstars. It's as if the country has dozens of icons on the level of Helene Fischer - my personal hell. Sorry. No, not really.

And now they're finally losing it here, supposedly for a good reason. BTS, the Kings of K-Pop, could be back soon. The band had to pause while four of its seven members completed their mandatory military service.

I wish them a happy reunion and you a fantastic day - annyeonghi gyeseyo!

Yours,

Yannik Schüler

Los Angeles Protests and the Trump Administration

The ongoing protests in Los Angeles are a response to federal immigration enforcement actions and have resulted in a legal standoff with the Trump administration. Two dominant narratives have emerged: resistance and law-and-order. The protests have escalated the conflict, making it a national flashpoint.

Impact of Trump’s Actions

Trump’s mobilization of the National Guard and Marines has created friction between federal and state authorities, sparked legal challenges, and generated political fallout. The chaos in Los Angeles is being used by the Trump administration to further its law-and-order narrative and strengthen its base.

Policing the Protest and Crisis Response

The prosecution of the protests and crisis response relies on age-old emergency response frameworks, with California relying on mutual aid to manage order. Property damage has been relatively contained, although there has been no loss of life so far. The political consequences of the unrest are uncertain, with experts suggesting that either non-violent protest or protester-initiated violence could influence public opinion.

  1. I'm not gonna let Gavin Newsom's swift rise to prominence go unnoticed, especially when his Kennedy-esque charm poses a potential MAGA nightmare.
  2. In contrast to the escalating chaos in entertainment-centered Los Angeles, the discussions about Russia, disarmament, and new missiles in German politics might offer a refreshing change, serving as a beacon for political entertainment.
  3. Sports fans in Poland might find themselves immersed in a different kind of struggle this fall, as they eagerly await updates on the adventures of Asterix, Obelix, and Idefix, proving that iconic characters and gripping narratives can captivate audiences beyond the political arena.
