Violence in Sudan's North Darfur: UN Reports Over 480 Civilian Deaths, Rampant Sexual Assault in Two Weeks

Furious, Unfiltered Update

Hellfire ravages Sudan's North Darfur, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. Over 480 innocent lives snuffed out by senseless violence in just two weeks this month, and the actual count could be significantly higher, the United Nations reports.

The UN human rights office dropped this bombshell on Friday, expressing utter dismay at the carnage unfolding. Rampant sexual violence has been unleashed upon the region's defenseless inhabitants, including the heinous acts committed against young children – a sight too bitter to stomach.

Volker Turk, the UN rights chief, bluntly stated, "The suffering of the Sudanese people is unimaginable, incomprehensible, and utterly unacceptable."

North Darfur serves as a battleground in the ongoing war that erupted on April 15, 2023, between Sudan's army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by al-Burhan's former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. This conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, triggering a humanitarian catastrophe so dire, it's been dubbed the world's worst.

One of the latest savage attacks took place at the Zamzam displacement camp between April 11-13, leaving at least 210 civilians, including nine medical professionals, dead. Reports indicate women, girls, and boys being mercilessly raped or gang-raped there or while attempting to escape.

Worse still, at least 129 more civilians met their end between Sunday and Thursday this week in el-Fasher city, Um Kedada district, and the Abu Shouk displacement camp. Some of these attacks were ethnically motivated, with certain communities specifically targeted, according to the UN.

Turk пишет, "The rising number of civilian casualties and the widespread reports of sexual violence are absolutely appalling."

On top of that, the UN alleges "dozens of people" have perished due to a lack of food, water, and medical care in detention facilities run by the RSF or during their arduous journey fleeing the bloodshed.

Fighting in North Darfur has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians – many of whom had previously fled their homes during the conflict. These displaced individuals confront dire conditions amid continued restrictions on access to essential humanitarian assistance.

Despite the mounting crisis, the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a chilling warning – it may soon be forced to scale back its food support due to funding shortages. Rations in areas at risk of famine have been slashed to 70 percent of a standard WFP ration (equal to 2,100 kcal per day). The aid response is further jeopardized by continued attacks targeting humanitarian workers and medical personnel.

"The systems to assist victims in many areas are on the verge of collapse," Turk stated grimly. "Medical workers are themselves under threat, and even water sources have been purposely attacked."

Horrifying reports of violence in Darfur prompted the UK's Foreign Minister, David Lammy, to brand it as "bearing the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing and may amount to crimes against humanity." Lammy urged Sudan's army and the RSF to de-escalate immediately and pledged the UK's commitment to holding those responsible for the atrocities accountable.
