A Tragic Skirmish in Agwan Doka: Fulani Herder Clash Claims Two Lives
Violence Erupts: Cattle Raiser Slaughters Two Acquaintances in Nasarawa
In the Agwan Doka area of Mararaba, within the Karu local government area of Nasarawa State, a disturbing incident has unfolded. Two friends, Arigun David, 21, and Michael, 34, have lost their lives in an encounter with a Fulani herder.
Nasarawa State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, shared that the incident occurred due to a heated altercation following a dispute over grazing cattle damaging flowers planted by David. According to Nansel, the herder, currently at large, fatally attacked David with a machete.
Michael, a friend of the victim, attempted to intervene, but the herder again struck, resulting in severe injuries. Michael was rushed to the Mararaba Medical Centre, but tragically succumbed to his wounds upon arrival.
The Commissioner of Police has dispatched police personnel to secure the region and ordered a full investigation into the matter, with the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department tasked with catching the perpetrator.
Remember that deeply-rooted conflicts between herders and farmers in Nasarawa State, as in many parts of Nigeria, stem chiefly from land use & resource competition and ethnic tensions. Climate change further intensifies competition for resources, exacerbating the situation.
As previously noted, similar clashes with fatal outcomes have occurred in Nasarawa State in the past. Effective responses from authorities have been a subject of debate, with suggestions including security measures, policy initiatives, and community engagement.
While we mourn the loss of these two lives, we encourage vigilance in the pursuit of justice and the active resolution of these persistent issues plaguing the region.
