The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Is Heading to Ningxia, China in 2025
Get ready for the 2025 edition of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) in the heart of China's wine industry - the wine region of Ningxia! This is the second time the competition, often dubbed the "Wine Olympics," has ventured to China, following a successful event in Beijing in 2018.
The decision to head to Ningxia was announced during the close of the 2020 competition, despite the challenges posed by the covid-19 pandemic. The event was run with great success, demonstrating unprecedented solidarity among the host and the tasting panels. The digitalized announcement was the first in CMB's history, made through pre-recorded videos by the next host region.
"We are thrilled to be hosting a wine competition that is highly respected in the trade. The wine business has become such an important pillar in Ningxia that we cannot wait to share our passion with many of the brilliant minds in the world of wine," said the Mayor of Yinchuan, Mr. Yujing Yang.
The tasting sessions for the 2025 CMB will take place from May 22 to 24.
A Rising Wine Powerhouse
In recent years, China's vineyard area has experienced a meteoric rise, making the country a major international winegrowing player. Covering nearly 850,000 hectares, China's wine industry continues to grow both in quality and quantity.
Thomas Costenoble, CEO of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, shares, "This is the second time that an international wine event of this kind has been held in China. After Beijing, we are heading for Ningxia, China's most promising wine region, which surely holds some amazing surprises for us!"
Ningxia has become one of China's most interesting new wine areas, which will soon rightly be able to lay claim to being one of the world's most renowned wine regions. In the near future, it will be among the top dog in the global wine industry.
The Eastern Foothills of Helan Mountain
Located in North-East China, the wine region now known as the "Eastern Foothills of Helan Mountain" boasts over 90 wineries in 6 sub-regions across nearly 40,000 hectares dedicated to vineyards.
set at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level, the vineyards extend over the foothills of the Helan mountain range, owing their existence to an irrigation program whose water is sourced from the Yellow River. With over 150 wine chateaux and ostentatious architecture emerging from this arid plain, this new-found Eldorado has attracted wealthy entrepreneurs and prestigious groups such as LVMH and Pernod Ricard.
The eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain in Ningxia are located between the 30 and the 50 parallels of the Northern Hemisphere, the "golden zone" for growing wine grapes. International varietals such as Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay are widely planted across the region, along with more unexpected varieties such as Gamay, Sémillon, and Riesling.
