Chasing the Unmatchable: Vince Gill's Pearl '53 Tele
Guitar maestro Vince Gill, a living legend in the Eagles, has shared an intriguing story about his prized 1953 Telecaster – often considered one of the finest Blackguard Teles ever graced the stage. The captivating history of this instrument can't be ignored.
This six-string beauty was bought in 1978 from an old friend, back when songs were just whispers in Vince's room, and it cost him a bargain $450. Sports Hillbilly Red, this electric beauty is something of a legend, with a uniqueness that sets it apart.
Blackguard Teles are a treasure trove of history and folklore. Crafted individually during the era when guitars were a piece of art, each build would perform differently based on the craftsman's hands. Vince's white cube is no exception, and he's got up to 20 other Blackguards, but none with that special neck.
"It's so unique," Gill beams, "with that flat pole piece sound and the perfectly contoured neck. It's the first Tele I bought, and it's still my favorite. This guitar is an anomaly."
Various Teles, aged peers in the hunt for a fitting companion, were acquired through the years, but the promise of a Fender replica of Gill's holy grail seemed a pipedream. Fender, captivated by Vince's rising stardom, claimed they would make a model in his honor. Yet, Vince respectfully declined, admitting, "You can't make a guitar as good as my old white one."
Fender attempted to persuade Vince and, eventually, a prototype was built. However, the final product didn't quite measure up. Vince's ego wasn't dictated by a signature guitar model; he lost his beloved Tele in a devastating flood around 15 years ago.
Now, with Chris Holt joining the ranks as the latest Eagles guitarist, Vince finds himself transported back to his youth, strumming tunes in his bedroom, the room where it all began. Niagara falls couldn't flood the joy of creating music with the legendary group he's always adored.
