Village dwellers in Karabakh, caught in limbo, await transfer of control

In the aftermath of the war, signs of life spring up in Aghavno, a village once ravaged by conflict. The sounds of laughter echo from the schoolyard and fresh blooms decorate the gardens. Yet, a new road under construction by Azerbaijani workers casts a shadow over the tranquility. Once completed, hearsay suggests that Azerbaijan plans to seize control of Aghavno, forcing its current inhabitants, all Armenians, to make a heart-wrenching decision: stay or depart.

Situated at the heart of the intricate geopolitics of post-war Karabakh, Aghavno spent its pre-war days under Azerbaijani control, known as Zabukh. The first war between the two sides in the 1990s altered its fate, leaving it in ruins and under Armenian control, along with the entire Lachin district. Rebuilt with the backing of Armenian diaspora organizations, renamed Aghavno, and populated by Armenians hailing from both Armenia and diaspora communities in Syria and Lebanon, it now stands along the Lachin Corridor. This road serves as the fragile thread linking Armenia with Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the ceasefire agreement that ended the recent war, the Lachin district was to remain under Armenian control, with the exception of a narrow buffer along the corridor road. This strip was patrolled by Russian peacekeepers to ensure the safety of Armenians traveling between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when some of the villagers chose to defy orders and remained in Aghavno ahead of the December 2020 handover.

Those defiant few have since grown in number, with many returning to the village. They embody resilience and determination, becoming a beacon of hope for many Armenians. Their everyday life, however, is marked by constant obstacles, as they struggle to make ends meet without basic amenities such as gas and consistent electricity. To overcome these challenges, the villagers have relied on their own strength and resourcefulness, refusing to bow down to hardship.

In an effort to support the defiant residents, various Armenian organizations have stepped in, providing assistance and resources. The self-sufficient spirit of the people has also inspired initiatives like Mshakutamet, which has introduced weekly classes in sewing, piano, and traditional dances. Teach for Armenia has also sent an English teacher to Aghavno's school, an opportunity rarely offered to Karabakh village schools.

Now, as the future of Aghavno hangs in the balance, the village teems with uncertainty. Azerbaijan plans to bypass Aghavno with a new road, stipulated in the ceasefire agreement. Once completed, Azerbaijan plans to take control of the land along the original route, seemingly accelerating the timeline outlined in the agreement. This has sent ripples of worry through the village, with its residents unsure about their immediate future.

But the spirit of Aghavno remains unbroken, as its people show their unwavering resolve. Feelings in the village are a mix of anticipation and apprehension, but the people of Aghavno vow to stand their ground until the very last minute. Whether they shall succeed in preserving their homeland remains to be seen, as the dance of politics and power unfolds in the complex geopolitical landscape of the Lachin Corridor.
