Viking Reports Indicate Placing Running Back Aaron Jones (Hamstring Injury) on Injured Reserve and Signing Running Back Cam Akers

Vikings Sign Running Back Cam Akers to Practice Squad, as Aaron Jones Heads to Injured Reserve

The Minnesota Vikings have made a move in their backfield, signing running back Cam Akers to their practice squad. This comes as starting running back Aaron Jones is set to miss at least four games due to a hamstring injury.

Akers, a 26-year-old running back, was previously selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He has had a varied career, playing for the Rams (2020-23), Vikings (2023, 2024), Texans (2024), and Saints (2025, for a short period).

In his career, Akers has rushed for 2,025 yards and 13 touchdowns on 502 attempts, and has 52 receptions for 388 yards and four TDs in 53 regular-season games (17 starts) for the Rams, Vikings, and Texans. Notably, he has not started any regular-season games in his career.

Akers was traded from the Minnesota Vikings to the Houston Texans in October 2024, but no team bought him from the Texans in the same month. He was later released by the New Orleans Saints in August this year. In his brief stint with the Vikings in parts of 2023 and 2024, he has 102 carries for 435 yards and two TDs along with 21 catches for 122 yards and two scores.

Akers has previously been with the Vikings on three separate occasions. His most recent tenure with the team saw him play in 18 regular-season games (no starts).

Meanwhile, Jones, a 30-year-old running back, was placed on injured reserve by the Vikings due to his hamstring injury. He has had a productive career, rushing for 7,124 yards and 50 touchdowns, and catching 326 passes for 2,528 yards and 21 touchdowns in 116 regular-season games (104 starts).

In his first season with the Vikings in 2024, Jones rushed 255 times for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns, and caught 51 passes on 62 targets for 408 yards and two scores. He started both games for the Vikings (1-1) this season and has 13 carries for 46 yards, three receptions on four targets for 44 yards, and one touchdown.

Jones' impressive performance earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl in 2020. In the playoffs, he has 559 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, and 214 receiving yards and one score in eight games (all starts).

With Jones out, Jordan Mason is set to start for the Vikings at running back. The team's signing of Akers to the practice squad suggests they are preparing for a potential absence from Jones for an extended period.
