Cincinnati Bengals Bolster Quarterback Depth with Desmond Ridder

The Cincinnati Bengals have made a move to strengthen their quarterback depth, announcing that Jake Browning will be their new starting quarterback. This decision comes following the loss of Joe Burrow last Sunday against Jacksonville due to turf toe.

To support Browning, the Bengals have elevated Brett Rypien from their practice squad. Additionally, they have signed Sean Clifford and Mike White to their practice squad.

Desmond Ridder, who was previously signed by the Cincinnati Bengals in July and released on Aug. 26, has found his way back to the team. His role with the Bengals is expected to add depth to the quarterback position.

Ridder, a veteran free agent, has been signed to the Bengals' 53-man roster. In his rookie season with the Atlanta Falcons, he went 2-2 as a starter and 6-7 in his second season. His passing statistics include 374 completions out of 588 attempts (63.6%), totaling 4,002 yards with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Ridder also rushed for five touchdowns with the Falcons in 2023.

Before joining the Bengals, Ridder was last with the Atlanta Falcons, then the Arizona Cardinals, and most recently the Minnesota Vikings. He was drafted by the Falcons in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings, who are hosting the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, currently have Carson Wentz set to start with rookie Max Brosmer as his backup. However, J.J. McCarthy, the starter for the Vikings, is currently week-to-week with a high ankle sprain, which could potentially open the door for Ridder to see action.

Ridder's arrival in Minnesota comes after he lost his only start while making six appearances for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. With the Vikings, his role will likely be to provide depth to the quarterback position.

As the Bengals and Vikings prepare to face off this Sunday, the quarterback position will undoubtedly be a point of interest for both teams and their fans.
