A solemn vigil is held to commemorate Patricia Wright, a local resident who was brutally raped and murdered in her own apartment by a right-wing extremist 27 years ago. The organizers aim to remember Patricia, and stand against any form of violence, forgetting, and for a proper tribute.

Here's a statement from the Anti-Racism and Diversity Alliance

Violence lurks in the shadows, even in the heart of our city. The gruesome murder of Patricia Wright on February 3, 1996, in Bergisch Gladbach serves as a grim reminder.

With a vigil, the organizers seek to honor Patricia, and set a visible mark against any form of violence, against forgetting, and for a respectful tribute.

On Monday, June 16, 2025, at 5 PM, a vigil will take place at the memorial stele for Patricia Wright on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. Under the motto "Never a solitary act - Not forgotten - Not silenced", we remember a shocking crime - and a young woman who lost her life because of her stance.

Background

Patricia Wright was 23 when she was brutally attacked and killed in her Hand district apartment. The perpetrator targeted her because of a pin bearing the words "Nazis out". The crime was politically motivated, laden with deep misogyny, and was officially recognized as a right-wing motivated murder in 2009.

For years, this crime didn't garner much attention in Bergisch Gladbach. Only through the efforts of young activists and the "Remembrance Political Initiative Bergisch Gladbach" did Patricia's story gain widespread recognition. Since June 2024, a stele on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz now stands as a permanent reminder of her.

Three organizations honor Patricia Wright

On June 16, 2025, Patricia Wright would have turned 53. In a bid to ensure her story is not forgotten, three organizations have united to organize a vigil to keep Patricia's memory alive: the "Bergisch Gladbach for Democracy and Diversity" association, the "Anti-Racism and Diversity Alliance", and the "Remembrance Political Initiative Bergisch Gladbach".

The vigil aims to remember Patricia, warn against any form of violence, particularly the growing threat of right-wing violence. Right-wing crimes are reaching alarming levels, and every day, a femicide is committed in Germany.

The vigil is thus a call to our city community:

Don't turn a blind eye. Don't forget. But stand up loudly and clearly, for democracy, human dignity, and equality.

The vigil takes place on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 5 PM on Konrad-Adenauer-Platz at the memorial stele for Patricia Wright.
