Bad Omens Embrace New Direction with Darker, More Diverse Sound
Bad Omens, the American metalcore band known for their signature darker emotional themes, are set to evolve their sound in their upcoming music. In an interview with Metal Hammer in February 2024, frontman Noah Sebastian revealed that while he anticipates moving away from heavy metalcore as he matures, he still wants to keep the "darker aspects of art and life and emotion" as central elements in their music.
The band's new direction was hinted with the release of the cinematic single "Specter" in 2025. The single carries an atmospheric, haunting tone, signaling a blend of their dark aesthetic with broader musical influences. The track, which has now accumulated over 2.7 billion streams globally, features Ryan Hurst, an actor known for his roles in Sons Of Anarchy and The Walking Dead.
In the video for "Specter", Hurst plays an authority figure as he tries to conduct an interview with a young boy who is hiding beneath a white bedsheet. The chorus pivots on the lyric "Do you feel love? I know I don't with no one to hold."
Sebastian expressed his excitement about his work-in-progress, stating it feels true to the voice in his head. He clarified that his band's new music will not become a "bubblegum pop record", criticizing the metal community's tendency to label any polished or catchy music as pop or EDM.
Bad Omens teased the release of "Specter" on their social media pages earlier this week, marking it as the first new music by the band since their 2022 album The Death of Peace of Mind. In September 2023, the band posted photos on their social media accounts indicating they were recording new music. However, Sebastian did not specify a release date for Bad Omens' new music in his Metal Hammer interview.
In October 2023 at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sebastian mentioned that he was tired from working on albums. Despite this, he stated that his main goal is to always create music that feels true to him and is not forced. Sebastian admitted he would like to continue using "the darker aspects of art and life and emotion" in his music, using them "tastefully" as paints on his artistic canvas.
Fans can expect an evolution towards a more eclectic, emotionally dark but musically diverse style that remains true to the band’s identity without crossing into mainstream pop territory, reflecting Sebastian's growth and expanding musical interests.
