South Korea and Vietnam Strengthen Nuclear Cooperation
South Korea and Vietnam have deepened their strategic ties, with a focus on nuclear cooperation, as the two countries aim to formalize their relationship through recent agreements.
In August 2025, key industry ministries from both countries signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) to develop joint projects in the renewable and nuclear energy sectors. The cooperation is part of a larger agenda under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which also covers trade, security, science, and technology.
One of the significant MOUs was signed between Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) and Vietnam’s state-owned Petrovietnam (PVN). This agreement aims to develop a skilled workforce for Vietnam’s emerging nuclear power industry, as the country plans to construct four nuclear reactors by 2035.
The South Korean government has pledged to support Vietnam through technical guidance, human resource development, and investments. This includes a five-year official development assistance program targeting critical mineral supply chain technologies relevant to energy sectors.
The cooperation was reinforced during a high-level summit in Seoul between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Vietnam's General Secretary To Lam. The leaders emphasized the importance of deepening strategic ties, with a focus on nuclear energy development.
This expanded cooperation between South Korea and Vietnam is a significant step towards establishing Vietnam's nuclear power capacity by 2035. The two countries are working together to ensure a sustainable and secure energy future.
