Vietnam's brutal cold front freezes northern regions below 5°C
A strong cold front has swept across Vietnam since February 7, 2026, bringing freezing temperatures and harsh weather. The northern, north central, and central regions are all experiencing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and biting winds. Forecasters warn that conditions will remain severe before easing slightly after February 9 in the north.
The cold snap has pushed temperatures in northern Vietnam down to between 11-14°C, with highland areas dropping below 5°C. In some mountain regions, readings could fall as low as 3°C, raising the risk of frost and even snow. Hà Nội is facing persistent rain and showers, with early mornings and midday on Monday seeing particularly harsh conditions.
Further south, the north central region is recording temperatures of 13-16°C. From Thanh Hóa to Huế City, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and cold gusts are expected throughout the day. The Gulf of Tonkin and waters from Quảng Trị to Đắk Lắk are also battling strong northeasterly winds, creating rough seas.
The cold air mass will continue to affect central Vietnam, maintaining stormy weather and high winds. While the north may see a slight temperature rise after February 9, other areas will remain under the influence of this cold spell for longer.
The current weather system has disrupted daily life across multiple regions, with travel and outdoor activities likely impacted. Northern highlands face the most extreme conditions, while coastal and central areas deal with heavy rain and strong winds. Relief is expected in the north by mid-week, though other regions will take more time to recover.
