Vietnam's booming data centre market attracts billions in new investments

Vietnam's data centre market is expanding rapidly as demand for digital services and artificial intelligence grows. Major projects are now underway in key cities, with investments totalling billions of dollars. New regulations and competitive energy costs are also making the country an attractive hub for data infrastructure. Several large-scale data centre developments are currently in progress. In HCM City, Viettel IDC is building a facility with a designed capacity of up to 140 MW. Meanwhile, the CMC Hyperscale Data Centre, backed by over USD 250 million in investment, will start with 30 MW and can expand to 120 MW. Another major project in Kinh Bắc City, developed with AIC and VietinBank, targets a 200 MW IT load in Tân Phú Trung Industrial Park, with an estimated cost of nearly USD 2 billion.

Hà Nội and HCM City currently have a combined operational capacity of around 60 MW, leaving significant room for growth. Operators in Vietnam maintain data centres to Tier III or Tier III+ standards, ensuring high reliability, security, and uninterrupted service. The Telecommunications Law 2023 has further boosted the sector by allowing 100% foreign ownership in data centre services under a more flexible regulatory framework. This change aligns with broader trends in Southeast Asia, where markets are scaling up capacity and diversifying offerings. Globally, data centre capacity could double from 103 GW to 200 GW by 2030, supported by an estimated USD 3 trillion in infrastructure investment over the next five years. Vietnam's competitive electricity pricing and growing renewable energy sources—including hydropower, wind, and solar—add to its appeal as a data centre destination.

The expansion of Vietnam's data centre market reflects rising demand for digital infrastructure and AI applications. With major investments, updated regulations, and reliable energy supplies, the country is positioning itself as a key player in the region. These developments are expected to support long-term growth in data processing and cloud services.
