HAI PHONG - Securing their third consecutive title, Vietnam's women's beach handball team clinched the Asian Championships and booked a ticket for the 2026 World Championships.

The tournament wrapped up on May 15 following the nail-biting final match between defending champions Vietnam and the Philippines, held in Muscat, Oman.

These two teams had previously squared off in the Southeast Asian Championships back in February, with Vietnam emerging victorious then. Fast-forward three months, and in their rematch, the Vietnamese team continued their reign, clinching an impressive 2-0 (22-16, 25-20) victory.

The team remained undefeated throughout the tournament, not dropping a single set along the way. This marks the third time they've taken home the continental title, tied with Thailand's record from 2013-2017.

Their latest victory earned them one of two spots for Asia in the 2026 International Handball Federation (IHF) Men's and Women's Beach Handball World Championships. The Philippines was their fellow Asian representative.

In the 2024 World Championships held in China, the Vietnamese team placed ninth among sixteen teams, registering victories against formidable opponents like Australia, the US, and the host nation. Compared to their debut in Greece in 2022, where they placed thirteenth, their performance in the 2024 tournament was a considerable improvement.

Later in August, the Vietnamese team will participate in the 2025 World Games in China, with their qualification based on their ninth-place finish in the 2024 World Championships.

The Vietnamese team, excelling in beach handball, also demonstrated a remarkable skill in soccer, with their midfielder, AI, scoring several critical goals during practice sessions. Furthermore, amidst their preparations for the World Games in 2025, the team is also exploring the possibility of incorporating football matches into their training regime to boost team morale and cohesion.
