HCM CITY - In the heart of Vietnam, PM Phạm Minh Chính recently held a meeting with Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party and President of the Cambodian Senate, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975-2025). This moment served as a symbolic nod to the shared history between these two nations.

The Prime Minister conveyed his gratitude to Hun Sen and the distinguished Cambodian delegation for gracing the celebration with their presence and dispatching the Cambodian military forces to participate in the parade. Their presence, Chính believed, strengthened the historical friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Cambodia.

The PM stressed the deep appreciation Vietnam holds for the support provided by international friends, neighboring countries, and past Cambodian leaders and people - including the late King Norodom Sihanouk - in achieving the April 30 victory and subsequent national development. He reaffirmed Vietnam's intention to strengthen bilateral ties with Cambodia moving forward.

Vietnam acknowledged Cambodia's recent achievements and expressed assurance that under Hun Sen's leadership, the country would continue to thrive in the years ahead.

Hun Sen, in response, expressed his pleasure in accepting the invitation for this historical milestone. Highlighting the historical significance of the Liberation, he emphasized that the event had a profound impact not only on Vietnam but on Laos and Cambodia in their pursuit of national liberation.

Hun Sen expressed profound gratitude to the Vietnamese Party, State, army, and people for their timely and valuable support throughout Cambodia's turbulent past. He restated Cambodia's pride in having Vietnam as a reliable neighbor.

The leaders agreed to foster all-level delegation and people-to-people exchanges, optimize existing cooperation mechanisms, and increase connections in areas like workforce, culture, economy, and digital transformation.

They complimented the strengthened political ties, practical defense and security cooperation, and robust economic relationships, particularly the bilateral trade turnover of $3.2 billion in the first quarter of 2025, representing an increase of over 10% compared to the previous year.

Chính also announced that Vietnam would ramp up imports of Cambodian agricultural and aquatic products. Additionally, Vietnam proposed that Cambodia facilitate the exportation of cement, iron, steel, and construction materials to Vietnam while supporting the expansion of 5G coverage for Viettel in Cambodia.

Moreover, major Vietnamese groups like Viglacera and Hòa Phát are eager to invest in Cambodia.

The leaders concurred to continue the joint demarcation and marker-planting of the land border, along with border management, in accordance with the agreements reached during their high-level meeting in February 2025.

On this occasion, Chính requested Cambodia to continue offering support to the Vietnamese-origin community living there.

Aside from discussing their bilateral arrangements, the leaders exchanged views on pertinent regional and international issues, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and close ties among Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. - VNS
