Vietnamese navy vessel sets sail for multinational naval exercise under ASEAN's auspices
The ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX 3) is underway from August 15 to 22, 2025, in Penang, Malaysia. This significant event brings together 10 naval vessels, three helicopters, one high-speed craft, and over 1,200 personnel from various ASEAN nations.
Vietnam is one of the participating nations, represented by the Vietnam People's Navy and their frigate, the Quang Trung (Frigate 016). The delegation, led by Deputy Commander of Naval Region 4, Senior Captain Nguyen Vinh Nam, embarked on a 1,200-nautical-mile voyage from Cam Ranh Military Port and arrived in Malaysia on August 16. During the journey, the crew conducted combat readiness and reconnaissance drills.
The Vietnamese delegation's participation in AMNEX 3 underscores Vietnam's commitment to regional maritime security cooperation and diplomacy. The Malaysian vice admiral commended the Vietnam People's Navy for deploying one of its most capable vessels, highlighting Vietnam's professionalism and significant contribution to the exercise's success.
On August 17, Vietnamese officers and sailors participated in a Friendship Parade in George Town, Penang, alongside other ASEAN navies, demonstrating camaraderie and reinforcing unity and maritime cooperation in the region.
AMNEX 3 aims to enhance coordination in addressing common maritime security challenges, strengthen mutual trust, and promote peace and stability in the region. The exercise also serves as an opportunity for the delegation to improve their command and coordination skills, combat readiness, and mastery of weapons and equipment during prolonged operations at sea.
The program includes various activities such as opening and closing ceremonies, ship tours, receptions, formation maneuvers, replenishment at sea, maritime security drills, aerial photography, and ceremonial passing exercises. A notable highlight is the ASEAN Naval Fleet Review on August 21.
By participating in AMNEX 3, Vietnam demonstrates its commitment as a member of the ASEAN Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM). The delegation will be part of the opening and closing ceremonies of AMNEX 3 and will also participate in port activities, the ASEAN Naval Fleet Review, and at-sea exercises.
This mission provides an opportunity for the delegation to gain experience in hosting and joining international events, further strengthening relations, cooperation, mutual understanding, and trust among participating navies.
- The Vietnamese delegation's participation in the diplomatic arena extends beyond maritime security, as they also showed solidarity in sports, participating in the Friendship Parade in George Town, Penang.
