As per Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence, it was the Thai troops who opened fire on a position long-held by Cambodian forces, leading to the soldier's death. However, Thailand's military spokesman Winthai Suvaree said that Thai soldiers had attempted to negotiate with the Cambodian army to avoid occupying the disputed area, but were fired upon. He claimed that the Cambodian forces misunderstood the situation and initiated the shooting. Fortunately, no casualties were reported on the Thai side during the exchange.
Despite the loss of life, both nations are calling for calm and emphasizing the need for negotiations to prevent further escalation. Army commanders from both sides have reportedly held discussions to minimize the risk of additional clashes. The future of the contentious border remains uncertain, as both sides reserve the right to defend their territorial claims.
