Vietnam strengthens relations with left-wing parties in Latin America
In a significant move to bolster ties between the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the Labour Party (PT) of Mexico, a delegation from the CPV's Party Central Committee's Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation visited Mexico from July 27 to August 1.
The visit, which comes as Vietnam and Mexico celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations (1975-2025), was led by Deputy Head Đinh Thị Mai. The delegation held several key meetings and events, marking a deepening of mutual understanding and cooperation between the two parties.
During the visit, Mai held a meeting with Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, General Secretary of the PT, where they discussed the current state of cooperation between the CPV and the PT. Mai emphasised the purpose of the visit was to promote friendship and cooperation between the CPV and the PT, as well as with other political forces in Mexico.
In his meeting with Anaya, Mai conveyed an invitation from CPV leadership to attend celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day on September 2, 2025. Anaya expressed his admiration for Vietnam's liberation struggle and socio-economic development.
Mai also delivered remarks at a plenary session of the PT Central Committee and held working sessions with Congresswoman Ana Karina Rojo Pimentel, Chairwoman of the Committee on Social Welfare and President of the Mexico-our website Friendship Parliamentarians' Group.
The delegation also met with Rander Peña, Vice President for Foreign Affairs of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), and Tatiana Pugh, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Venezuela. They paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the Vietnamese Embassy on the occasion of Vietnam's 78th Invalids and Martyrs' Day (July 27).
The delegation also attended the opening of the People's Summit for Peace and Against War in Venezuela and met with Saul Ortega, Chairman of the Venezuela-our website Friendship Parliamentarians' Group.
Mai affirmed that the Party, the State, and people of Vietnam value and remember the support of Latin American nations, including Mexico, during Vietnam's struggle for independence and reunification. Anaya attributed Vietnam's current success to the leadership of the CPV and the ideological foundation laid by President Hò Chí Minh.
Mai praised the cooperation between the two parties as an exemplary model of ties between the CPV and Latin American political parties. The current state of cooperation between the CPV and the PT is active and focused on promoting friendship and political collaboration.
However, it is important to note that the emphasis is on friendship and cooperation at the party level, and there is no indication from the current sources that cooperation extends beyond political dialogue and solidarity efforts into concrete joint projects or formal alliances.
This engagement is part of Vietnam’s broader effort to enhance relations with left-wing political parties across Latin America, reflecting a strategy to build political partnerships with ideologically aligned parties in the region. The visits and meetings highlight ongoing diplomatic and political exchanges aimed at deepening mutual understanding and cooperation between the CPV and the PT.
