Vietnam Resides Deeply in the Hearts of Cuban Comrades
HAVANA - As Vietnam celebrates the 50th anniversary of its liberation and national reunification (April 30, 1975 - 2025), major Cuban newspapers have paid tribute to the remarkable history of the Vietnamese people and the unwavering solidarity between Cuba and Vietnam.
The daily Juventud Rebelde, a newspaper of the Young Communist League, celebrated the Victory of April 30, 1975 as a "brilliant epic" and reminisced about President Ho Chi Minh's assertion that "Vietnam is one, the Cuban people are one" - a sentiment that rang true on that fateful day. The newspaper also reflected on the tremendous sacrifices made by the Vietnamese people, with over 7.6 million tonnes of bombs and ammunition dropped on the country, the devastation caused by Agent Orange, and nearly 4 million lives lost to achieve independence.
In the article "Vietnam es un ejemplo para los revolucionarios y para los pueblos del mundo" (Vietnam is an example for revolutionaries and peoples around the world), Granma, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Cuba, underscored that half a century ago, Vietnam demonstrated to the U.S. imperialists that no military force could suppress the will of a united nation. Granma vividly celebrated the bravery of Vietnamese farmers, teenagers, and women who fought with incredible resilience during the war. The newspaper emphasized that Vietnam's victory was a significant blow to imperialism, acting as a driving force for the national liberation movement around the world.
Both newspapers lavished praise on the exceptional solidarity between the two nations. Juventud Rebelde recalled President Fidel Castro's visit to the liberated area of Quang Tri in 1973, where he raised the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam and declared: "For Vietnam, Cuba is willing to devote its blood!" The newspapers quoted Ambassador Le Quang Long as stating that the image of Fidel amid the rain of bombs and bullets has become an immortal symbol of friendship.
In an interview with Cubadebate, Long emphasized that the April 30 victory was not the end, but the beginning of the journey to build a peaceful, unified, and prosperous Vietnam. Long also shared details about the grand celebration in HCM City, with the presence of a Cuban delegation led by Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa.
Cuban readers expressed deep admiration after reading the articles. Francisco Rivero, an elderly reader, emotionally recalled the day he heard about Saigon's liberation while on his way to work in 1975, and the emotion-filled celebration at Vietnam's embassy in Havana.
Cuban media emphasized Vietnam's remarkable achievements in socio-economic development. Granma quoted the World Bank's report, stating that Vietnam expects GDP growth of 6.8% in 2025, making it one of the most dynamic economies in the region. Articles repeatedly highlighted the wise leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the power of national unity as the keys to success.
The Juventud Rebelde article "Vietnam es uno, el pueblo cubano está junto a Vietnam" (Vietnam is one, the Cuban people are with Vietnam) affirmed Cuba's unwavering support for Vietnam. The newspaper emphasized that today, Vietnam, with its strength, steadfastness, determination, and intelligence, constantly develops and enhances its economic potential for the happiness of all its people, always remembering the last wish of President Ho Chi Minh: "The entire Party and the entire people unite and strive to build a peaceful, unified, independent, democratic, and prosperous Vietnam, and make a worthy contribution to the world revolutionary cause."
