HANOI - Vietnam has picked its national futsal team and is gearing up for the AFC Women's Futsal Asian Cup 2025, happening from May 6 to 17.

Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang handpicked 14 athletes, who have been sweating it out at grueling training sessions and friendly matches in both Vietnam and Japan, for the competition. They're heading to China for the tournament.

Tomorrow, the team will play a friendly match against the hosts as a final warm-up before the action gets underway.

"Our aim is to seal a spot in the World Cup. However, our initial goal is to pass the group stage, and then we'll strategize for the next round," said Hoang before flying off to the Hohhot event on May 1.

He added that his players are hyped for the tournament and are brimming with confidence, aiming to secure multiple victories.

Vietnam finds itself in Group B and will take on Hong Kong (China) on May 7, the Philippines on May 9, and champs Iran two days later.

Both Vietnam and Hong Kong will make their third appearances at the tournament, while the Philippines will compete for the first time.

Vietnam snagged its best result yet at fourth place back in 2018, and heading into this campaign, they're the champs of the inaugural ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship in 2024. The team have been runners-up at all five Southeast Asian (SEA) Games thus far.

Hong Kong and the Philippines, on the other hand, are aiming to reach the knockout phase for the first time.

Iran appears to be the strongest contender, as they've nabbed this title twice, in 2015 and 2018.

In other groups, China will square off against Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, and debutants Australia in Group A. Japan, gunning for their first title after two second-place finishes, will go up against Thailand, Indonesia, and Bahrain in Group C.

The two strongest teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams will progress to the next round.

The final match is slated for May 17.

The top three finishers will also qualify for the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup 2025, set to be held in the Philippines, who have already qualified automatically. VNS
