Vietnam Prepared to Facilitate Connections Between Hungary and Southeastern Asia: Party Head
HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Party General Secretary Tô Lâm hosted a reception on Wednesday for Hungarian President Sulyok Tamás, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from May 27-29. The meeting occurred during the 75th anniversary year of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1950-2025).
General Secretary Lam welcomed President Sulyok's visit and emphasized its significance for the bilateral relationship. He expressed appreciation for Hungary's support during Vietnam's past struggle for national liberation and reunification and noted the special bond between the two nations. He reaffirmed Vietnam's view of Hungary as a crucial partner in Central and Eastern Europe.
Vietnam, according to the Party chief, seeks to be a bridge between Hungary and Southeast Asia, with Hungary serving as a valuable gateway for enhancing ties with Central and Eastern Europe and the EU.
During the talks, both leaders noted with satisfaction the fruitful outcomes of previous discussions and the positive progress in bilateral relations. To deepen the traditional friendship between the nations, they discussed key directions and measures that included utilizing existing mechanisms, such as the Joint Economic Committee, capitalizing on the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), and initiating the Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation at an early date.
The Party chief suggested Hungary assist in training Vietnamese nuclear energy specialists and proposed increasing cooperation in education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, labor, culture, and locality-to-locality exchanges. President Sulyok expressed confidence in Vietnam's eventual victory during Vietnam's struggle for independence and recognized the Vietnamese community and students in Hungary as an essential force contributing to Hungary's socio-economic development. He congratulated Vietnam on its remarkable reform achievements and expressed Hungary's importance to the longstanding friendship with Vietnam.
The leaders agreed to foster political trust and deepen connections between their countries and ruling parties, expand high-level and sectoral exchanges, and strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, and education. They also emphasized the need to make defense-security a new pillar of their cooperation and to increase people-to-people exchanges for mutual understanding.
Both sides committed to close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, particularly the UN and ASEAN-EU framework, and reiterated their support for peaceful settlement of disputes in line with international law to promote peace, stability, and security in the region and globally.
