Vietnam and Thailand to devise a blueprint for the execution of their updated cooperation agreement

In a significant development, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Buì Thanh Sơn of Vietnam met with his Thai counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa, in Bangkok on Tuesday. The meeting aimed to reinforce the growing political and diplomatic ties between the two countries, as well as to discuss key areas of cooperation.

The officials reaffirmed strong political trust and the positive development of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, aiming to further enhance ties. Economic, trade, and investment cooperation was affirmed as a key pillar of the relationship, with a goal to increase two-way trade turnover to USD 25 billion in a balanced and sustainable way. Both sides agreed to remove investment challenges and encourage businesses to expand operations and improve market access.

Political and diplomatic relations were not the only focus of the discussion. The two ministers also pledged to advance cooperation in emerging and potential fields such as digital transformation, digital economy, green economy, renewable energy, and energy transition. In addition, they agreed to adopt new measures to boost tourism cooperation, including initiatives to enhance regional tourism connectivity within ASEAN.

Education, culture, transport, and people-to-people exchanges were also highlighted as important components of bilateral cooperation. The officials noted the growing achievements in these areas and expressed hope for continued success.

The Thai Foreign Minister updated Sơn on the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which Vietnam welcomed as part of regional stability efforts. Sơn expressed Việt Nam's attention to the situation and stated that Vietnam stands ready to play an active role in supporting both countries in upholding the ceasefire and promoting cooperation in the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and friendship for the long-term interests of both sides and the region at large.

The meeting also discussed the positive development of Việt Nam - Thailand relations, particularly the recent upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Sangiampongsa expressed appreciation for Việt Nam's support and called for more favourable conditions for Thai enterprises operating in Việt Nam.

Notably, no new fact was presented regarding the establishment of a joint working group to outline concrete implementation plans for the "Three Connections" strategy. However, the officials agreed to soon establish such a group to carry out plans related to the strategy, aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and integration.

The key cooperation areas discussed in the meeting reflect a broad and deepening partnership focused on sustainable economic growth, technological development, regional cooperation, and cultural ties. The two countries look forward to continued progress and strengthening of their strategic partnership in the coming years.
