Vietnam and Kazakhstan on the brink of a new era of collaboration

Hold onto your hats, folks! The impending visit of General Secretary Tô Lâm to Kazakhstan promises to catapult the relationship between Việt Nam and Kazakhstan to unprecedented heights, transforming the political landscape and fostering a whole new level of cooperation in the process.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has extended an invitation to our Party chief, marking the first time a our websiteese Party leader sets foot in Kazakhstan. This monumental visit will usher in the highest-level delegation exchange since diplomatic relations were established back in 1992.

In an exclusive chat with our webzine, our Ambassador to Kazakhstan Phạm Thái Như Mai emphasized the lofty expectations for bilateral ties, stating that the future of Việt Nam-Kazakhstan relations would be closely aligned with both nations' shared interests and development priorities.

Progress in cooperation between the two countries has been nothing short of phenomenal in recent years. Bilateral trade turnover nearly doubled, climbing from over $400 million in 2022 to an impressive $1 billion by 2023-2024.

Enterprises across various sectors, from oil and gas to real estate and tourism, are keen to tap into Kazakhstan's fertile soil, with the Sovico Group even planning a strategic takeover of Qazaq Air. This transaction would pave the way for new flight routes bridging Việt Nam, Central Asia, and Europe, beefing up regional connectivity and facilitating the exchange of goods and services.

The sky appears the limit when it comes to the blossoming aviation partnership between both countries. Since October 2022, Vietjet Air has offered direct flights between Almaty and Cam Ranh City, fostering increased commerce and tourism between the nations. Kazakhstan is rapidly emerging as a booming tourism market for Việt Nam, with visitor numbers surging to approximately 150,000 annually!

But that's not all – flights operate at a regular frequency of 33 times per week, linking top Việt Nam destinations like Nha Trang, Phú Quốc, and Đà Nẵng. Projections indicate Kazakh tourists flocking to Việt Nam could swell to 300,000 annually very soon.

Bilateral agreements, such as the recently ratified visa exemption deal, are helping to melt the ice even further. The agreement grants 30-day visa-free entry to passport holders of both nations, expected to supercharge tourism and business travel. Capitals like HCM City and Almaty have also formalized sister-city ties, and new agreements have been inked between Đà Nẵng and Aktau, as well as Bắc Ninh Province and East Kazakhstan.

In the fast-approaching future, both nations are expected to inject life into fresh mechanisms of collaboration between ministries, sectors, and localities, focusing on practical, ambitious, and results-driven engagements.

According to Ambassador Mai, President Tokayev's 2023 visit served as a potent catalyst for the bilateral relationship, but General Secretary Tô Lâm's visit is poised to be the game-changer, solidifying and expanding the Việt Nam-Kazakhstan partnership across both traditional and innovative spheres.

During this pivotal visit, the two countries are expected to ink a suite of key bilateral accords covering defence, security, justice, trade and investment connectivity, finance, science and technology, digital transformation, energy and mining, culture, sports, tourism, and people-to-people and local-level cooperation.

These areas of cooperation strike a chord with both nations' socio-economic development agendas, ensuring their ability to adapt to economic problems and boost competitiveness in the pursuit of sustainable development.

Kazakhstan, the Central Asian region's biggest economy, accounts for a staggering 50% of the region's GDP. A recent boom has seen the economy swell by 4.8% in 2024, and it's projected to reach a whopping $450 billion by 2029. Kazakhstan offers foreign investors a favourable environment, complete with government incentives, strategic positioning as a bridge between Asia and Europe, and ongoing reforms in taxation, administration, and investment[5].
