Viersen rocked by scams, fires, and break-ins in one chaotic evening
Viersen residents were left shaken and alarmed by a series of unusual incidents on Thursday evening. A woman bravely fended off a scammer, a fire broke out near Rathausmarkt, and a break-in occurred on Dechant-Stroux-Straße. Police are seeking information on these incidents.
The evening's events began around 3 p.m. when an unknown intruder broke into a top-floor apartment on Dechant-Stroux-Straße. The thief made off with jewelry, leaving the residents disturbed. Meanwhile, just before 8 p.m., a palm tree outside a restaurant near Rathausmarkt caught fire. A quick-thinking staff member extinguished the flames, preventing further damage.
Earlier in the evening, an elderly woman was targeted by a man posing as a telecommunications employee. The imposter tried to force his way into her home but was thwarted when she raised the alarm and alerted her neighbor. The suspect is described as a man aged 30-35, around 175 cm tall, with dark hair, wearing a dark quilted jacket, and carrying a business card from a well-known telecommunications firm. He spoke with a slight accent. Police believe he may have claimed to be from the Kreispolizeibehörde Viersen or the Polizeiwache Viersen to gain the woman's trust.
Viersen District Police can be contacted at 02162 3770 for any leads on these cases.
The incidents serve as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Police urge anyone with information to come forward to help bring the culprits to justice.
