Vientos of the Mets misses 4 consecutive games, remaining vigilant: "It's essential to stay prepared"
In the 2025 Major League Baseball season, New York Mets' infielder Mark Vientos has been grappling with a significant dip in form following his impressive breakout season in 2024.
After a demotion to Triple-A that almost consumed the entire month of June, Vientos displayed signs of life with some consistent playing time. This period included an impressive 11-game hitting streak for the young talent. However, his offensive regression has been the primary cause of his reduced role and performance.
Vientos' batting averages and power metrics have noticeably declined. In 2024, he hit .266/.322/.516 with 27 home runs and a strong 132 wRC+. In contrast, through 85–89 games in 2025, his line has fallen to about .232/.278/.372 or .238/.284/.412, with 9-12 home runs and 38-43 RBIs, and a wRC+ around 85–92. These figures represent below-average offensive contributions.
Inconsistent playing time has also been a factor, particularly during August 2025, where Vientos sometimes started only once in several games, and had to maintain readiness while often on the bench.
Moreover, Vientos' plate discipline has taken a hit. Although he reduced his strikeout rate from nearly 30% in 2024 to around 23% in 2025, his walk rate dropped, leading to a lower on-base percentage and OPS below .700, which has diminished his overall offensive value.
This offensive slump has had a detrimental impact on the Mets' lineup consistency, particularly in clutch situations. Previously a key power bat during the playoffs and a catalyst for rallies, Vientos' diminished hitting has left the lower batting order more vulnerable, weakening the team’s run production.
However, there are signs of improvement. Vientos showed some power resurgence in August 2025, including hitting multiple home runs in back-to-back games in a series versus the Atlanta Braves, where he went 5-for-13 with 3 homers and 5 RBIs. This suggests potential for a late-season resurgence.
Manager Carlos Mendoza has acknowledged the performances of Brett Baty and Starling Marte, emphasising the need for players to stay ready because playing time can change quickly. Vientos' current statistics in 82 games this season include a .230 batting average, a .345 slugging percentage, seven home runs, and 32 RBI.
Despite these struggles, Vientos remains optimistic about his future with the Mets, stating that "there's really no point" in approaching team brass about his lack of playing time.
