Viennese team Rapid is engaging in a battle for a berth in the Cup Semifinals
SK Rapid Wien secured their place in the Austrian Cup quarterfinals following a hard-fought 2:1 victory against Regional League side SV Oberwart. The match, played in front of 1,000 traveling fans from Rapid Wien, was a nail-biting encounter that saw the visitors having to sweat until the final whistle to secure the win.
The first goal of the game was scored by new signing Tobias Gulliksen in the 21st minute, and he added another just before halftime (45th minute) to give Rapid a comfortable 2:0 lead. However, SV Oberwart fought back after the break, earning a penalty in the 55th minute, which Lukas Ried converted to make it 1:2.
Despite securing a place in the round of 16, coach Peter Stoeger was critical of the team's performance. He stated that the complacency issues highlighted in the Oberwart match must be addressed before their upcoming away game at GAK. The coach emphasised the need for Rapid to avoid repeating the mistakes made against lower-league opponents in future matches.
The round of 16 draw will be held on September 20, 19:15 CET, and matches will be played at the end of October. The draw could potentially pit Rapid Wien against a higher-ranked opponent, presenting an opportunity for the team to improve their performance and address the complacency issues highlighted in the Oberwart match.
The upcoming match against GAK presents an opportunity for Rapid Wien to secure their first cup win since 1995, with the round of 16 still a significant hurdle. The cup win against SV Oberwart could serve as a wake-up call for Rapid Wien, highlighting potential complacency in their current form.
Meanwhile, Rapid will face TSV Hartberg in the Austrian Cup quarterfinals. The match against GAK is scheduled for a date in October, following the cup draw. The stadium is expected to be a cauldron of tension during the second half, as both teams fight for the win.
As the team prepares for the next round, fans will be hoping for a more convincing performance from Rapid Wien, as they aim to secure their first cup win in over two decades. The match against GAK will be a crucial test for the team, and a chance to prove that they have learned from their mistakes in the previous round.
