Vienna's Roads Gridlocked: 18km Backup After Collision, Heavy Rain Adds to Holiday Chaos
Vienna's roads were gridlocked on Monday morning, with the longest backup of 18 kilometers occurring on the Südosttangente (A23) following a collision. This incident was one of many causing delays across Austria, with holidaymakers returning and rain adding to the chaos.
The day began with a rear-end collision on the A23, leading to a traffic backup stretching 18 kilometers. Drivers faced delays of up to an hour. Earlier, a car fire near the Prater intersection further hindered morning traffic, with two lanes closed for extinguishing work.
Heavy rain and returning holidaymakers compounded the issue, causing widespread jams across Austria. Accident-related slowdowns were reported in Lower Austria, around Linz, and in Styria. Vienna's congestion even spilled back onto the A2 and A4, extending as far as Schwechat.
Monday's morning rush hour saw extensive traffic disruptions across Austria. A combination of factors, including accidents, heavy rain, and returning holidaymakers, led to significant delays. Motorists are advised to check traffic updates before setting off on journeys.
