Vienna's Pride Celebrations: A Comprehensive Guide to Pride Month
Celebrating Pride in Vienna: Christopher Street Day and Pride Month 2025
Every June, cities around the world come alive with rainbow flags and celebrations in honour of Pride Month, a time to honour LGBTQ+ history and the ongoing fight for equality. Vienna, Austria, is no exception, with the city set to host its annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) festivities on the 14th of June 2025.
The Origins of CSD
The roots of CSD can be traced back to 1969, when a spontaneous uprising against a police raid at the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York City's Greenwich Village marked a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ activism. This event, known as the Stonewall Riots, sparked the modern Pride movement. The first Christopher Street Liberation Day parade was held on June 28, 1970, in New York City, and inspired similar parades worldwide.
CSD in Vienna
In Vienna, CSD celebrations, particularly prominent in German-speaking countries, take place annually around late June or July. These events combine activism, visibility, and festivity with parades, parties, and educational activities. The Rainbow Parade, a key component of CSD in Vienna, starts at Rathausplatz and continues along the Ringstraße towards the parliament, opera, Urania, and back to Rathausplatz.
Registration and Schedule
Registration for the Pride Run, another popular event during CSD, can be done until the 5th of June 2025. The running number for the Pride Run can be picked up on the 12th of June 2025 from 4-7pm in WeMove Running Store in Wien Mitte The Mall. The Pride Run route is 5km and starts and ends at Rathausplatz. Athletes can participate in single, pair, or team competitions for the Pride Run, with the entry fee between €42 and €57, depending on the starting position.

Support for the LGBTQI+ Community
Thousands of people will demonstrate for the rights, acceptance, and respect of the LGBTQI+ community during the Rainbow Parade. For those who need support and advice regarding their sexual orientation or identity, counselling centres for LGBTQI+ people are available.
Rainbow in the City
During Pride Month, rainbow flags decorate the city landscape, and same-sex and mixed couples in the traffic lights shine bright. This year, Vienna's Pride celebrations will take place on the 13th of June for the Pride Run, and on the 14th of June for the Rainbow Parade.
A Call to Action
Announcements will be made at Rathausplatz at 6pm during the Rainbow Parade (politicians and activists), emphasizing the historical and ongoing significance of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. As we celebrate Pride in Vienna, let us remember the courage and activism of those involved in the Stonewall uprising and continue to advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live freely and without fear of discrimination.
