Vienna’s New Guide Helps Diners Choose Ethical Goose Dishes This November
Vienna's Animal Welfare Ombudsman Office has released a guide to assist diners in selecting restaurants and dishes that prioritize animal and environmental protection. This comes as many restaurants, including over 6,000 in Vienna, offer goose dishes in November, often with unclear or varying raising conditions for these animals.
The guide, set for release in 2025, will provide an overview of 17 certifications and programs in the restaurant and catering industry, evaluating each. It aims to help diners make informed decisions, especially regarding goose dishes. Currently, specific restaurants in Vienna recommended by the Tierwohlbeauftragter for their focus on animal welfare and sustainability in menu selection are not listed in a centralized guideline.
Austria boasts over 40,000 food service establishments, highlighting the significance of this guide. It will clarify the conditions under which geese are raised, with organic Austrian geese and organic geese from other origins guaranteed outdoor access, ensuring better animal welfare.
The upcoming guide from Vienna’s Animal Welfare Ombudsman Office will empower diners to choose restaurants and dishes that align with their values. By 2025, diners can expect clear information on animal welfare and sustainability in the restaurant industry, starting with goose dishes in November.
