Vienna opted for the decisive outcome

Vienna Election Results Recap

In the recent Vienna elections, the Socialist Party of Austria (SPO) clinched a narrow first place victory, securing 39.5 percent of the votes with a slight decrease. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) made significant gains, securing 20.8 percent, while the Greens maintained their position with 14.2 percent. The race for fourth place between NEOS and the Austrian People's Party (OVP) is still tight, with postal votes to be counted on Monday.

  • All contenders eye coalition with the SPO
  • Ludwig: A new coalition "ahead of summer"

On election night, NEOS and OVP were neck and neck, with 9.8 percent and 9.7 percent, respectively. Postal votes yet to be counted will only slightly change the results.

According to projections from the Foresight Institute and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), the SPO is projected to maintain 39.5 percent, while the FPO will reach 20.4 percent, and the Greens will secure 14.5 percent. The struggle for fourth place between NEOS (9.9 percent) and OVP (9.7 percent) is likely to continue after Monday's postal vote tally. The margin of error for these projections stands at +/-0.3 percentage points. Most postal votes were counted on Sunday.

SPO loses ground, OVP experiences a significant decline

Compared to the 2020 election results, the SPO dropped 2.2 percentage points, coming in at 41.6 percent then. The OVP suffered a substantial loss, plunging 10.7 percentage points from their previous 20.4 percent. The FPO recorded a significant increase, gaining a record 13.2 points, almost tripling their vote share from the Scandal of Ibiza days in 2019. The Greens managed to hold their own, losing only 0.3 points from their 2020 result of 14.8 percent. NEOS saw a gain of 2.5 points, moving up from 7.5 percent in 2020.

SPO faces coalition hurdles

According to the Foresight Institute's projection, the SPO (43 seats) has three possible coalition paths: continuing with their current partner NEOS (future 10 seats), working with the Austrian People's Party (OVP, also 10 seats), or joining forces with the Greens (15 seats). Collaborating with the FPO (22 seats) is not an option for the SPO.

KPO and Strache's bid fails

The KPO, partnered with the LINKS list, and team Strache, both failed to meet the 5 percent hurdle, garnering 4.0 and 1.1 percent, respectively.

Additional Insights

For the SPO, forming a coalition with the Greens, taking on a minority government, or relying on ad-hoc support from smaller parties appears most likely. However, if negotiations falter, a minority government becomes increasingly probable. The Greens and SPÖ may face challenges due to conflicting policies, particularly in areas like housing and economic stability versus stricter climate and social policies. The FPO's surge in popularity poses a threat, as they could block initiatives, forcing the SPO to pursue cross-aisle compromises.
