Vienna Museum Celebrates Overlooked Artist Michaelina Wautier's Bold Hairstyles
The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to the works of Michaelina Wautier, a female artist previously overlooked by art history. Around 30 of her paintings are on display, showcasing her distinctive style and bold choices, including her subjects' hairstyles.
Wautier's paintings often feature figures with wild, tousled hair, a characteristic that sets her works apart. This unique approach was not an exception but a common theme in her art. The exhibition, curated by Mag. Alexandra Matzner BA, includes her daring masterpiece, 'The Judgment of Paris'. Initially, this painting was attributed to a man, highlighting the historical oversight of Wautier's contributions.
Wautier's disregard for neat or groomed hair in her subjects was a conscious choice. It added to the dynamic and energetic nature of her paintings, making her works all the more striking.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum's exhibition brings to light the significant yet overlooked contributions of Michaelina Wautier. Through her bold hairstyles and dynamic figures, she left an indelible mark on art history. This exhibition is a testament to her unique style and a correction to past oversights.
