Videos shared by content creators in Gaza, depicting scenes from food kitchens, underscore mounting concerns over potential famine in the region

For two months, Gaza has been deprived of aid, escalating the risk of a looming famine for its 2.1 million residents. Last Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that aid shipments to the embattled Strip would resume following a hiatus.

The American-Israeli aid distribution system is set to start in Gaza as of Monday, according to sources familiar with the details. However, the plan has drawn criticism from established aid organizations.

Local content creators in Gaza, known for their food and recipe videos on social media, have persisted in posting from food kitchens amid the aid shortage. For instance, Hamada Sho, a widely-followed cook on social media based in Khan Yunis, shared videos of his cooking process in March 2024. Prior to the aid blockade, Sho posted a video online in February, in which he made a dessert using fresh fruit, cream, Twinkies, and delivered it to children on the beach.

The aid blockade imposed by Israel has caused essential food supplies to halt due to the conflict with Hamas. This has significantly increased the prices of available goods in Gaza. Sho lamented that ingredients like rice, beans, and others have become unaffordable for many, leaving them with only one meal per day as a minimum survival ration.

The ongoing crisis in Gaza has resulted in over 53,000 deaths since the conflict began, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The conflict began on March 1, following a temporary ceasefire between Hamas and Israel that ended on March 1. Israeli forces resumed military operations in Gaza on March 18.

Sho collaborates with local organizations like Watermelon Relief, a grassroots initiative offering aid to displaced families in Gaza, to procure raw materials for his cooking. However, the lack of available food resources has led to the closure of many kitchens, as detailed by Ahmed El-Madhoun, a coordinator for Watermelon Relief.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported on May 12 that 22% of Gaza will likely experience a food "catastrophe," with people "enduring one of the most harrowing humanitarian crises in recent history," according to a statement from humanitarian aid organization Mercy Corps.

As the food crisis continues to worsen in Gaza, community kitchens have become a lifeline for many, serving large quantities of food to those in need. Content creator Mohammed Abu Rijela has been serving over 3,000 meals a day from his kitchen, a fraction of his previous output of 10,000 meals per day prior to the crisis.

The viral cooking videos of Sho and Abu Rijela have sparked criticism on social media, with critics alleging that the videos depicting plentiful food contradict the reality of the crisis. However, El-Madhoun clarified that most videos featuring meat were likely filmed months prior to the aid blockade when meat was still available.

In recent months, many of the kitchens have been forced to close due to the dwindling food supplies in the region. Sho has had to rely on cheaper, available staples like legumes, peas, beans, and rice to cook for his community. The lack of food and essential resources continues to threaten the well-being and livelihood of millions of people in Gaza.

  1. The viral video analysis of local content creators in Gaza, like Hamada Sho and Mohammed Abu Rijela, has sparked controversy on social media, with some accusing their videos of portraying abundance amidst the crisis.
  2. The ongoing political conflict in Gaza, resulting in the aid blockade imposed by Israel, has led to a significant health concern, as many residents struggle to afford basic food supplies.
  3. In an attempt to alleviate the food crisis in Gaza, international aid organizations are called upon to provide assistance, mobilizing resources for the general-news coverage and global analysis of the ongoing crisis.
