In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the German-made Skynex air defense system has proven to be a valuable asset for Ukraine in countering Russian drone threats.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani believes that a withdrawal from the war by Russia would become a social problem for the Russian government due to the high salaries of soldiers. However, the need for effective defense against Russian drones is evident, and this is where Skynex comes in.

Ukraine has received at least two Skynex air defense systems as part of military aid packages from Germany. These systems, developed by Rheinmetall, are currently operational in Ukraine and have demonstrated high effectiveness against Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly Shahed-type loitering munitions.

According to recent Ukrainian Air Force reports and released footage from July 12, 2025, Skynex has consistently intercepted and destroyed incoming attack drones, with official statements highlighting "flawless results" in combating enemy UAVs.

Skynex is classified as a short-range air defense (SHORAD) system and is deployed in Ukraine to protect key infrastructure, including airfields and critical installations. Its use is kept confidential regarding exact locations and times to maintain operational security.

The system has proven highly effective, with recent air defense operations destroying 319 Shahed drones and 25 cruise missiles overnight. Though Skynex specifically accounted for at least seven of these interceptions, its contribution is part of a broader air defense network.

Skynex’s core component is the Oerlikon Mk3 automatic 35mm cannon, which can fire up to 1,000 rounds per minute with an effective range of up to 4 kilometers. It uses AHEAD-type programmable detonation shells that create a cloud of warheads designed to maximize hit probability against fast, low-flying targets like drones.

Besides drones, Skynex can engage other threats such as cruise missiles, precision-guided munitions, and even artillery and mortar rounds, making it a versatile addition to Ukrainian air defense.

Ukrainian companies are also developing weapons for individual soldiers to combat attacking drones, such as the "Mitla" net launcher and anti-drone ammunition in 5.56 mm caliber.

Meanwhile, North Korea has already deployed more than 10,000 soldiers and weapons to Russia, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledging further support for Russia in the Ukraine war. This development underscores the importance of effective air defense systems like Skynex for Ukraine.

In other news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expresses optimism about acquiring Patriot air defense systems, and Generalmajor Christian Freuding announced that the German army will receive the first interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system from new domestic production by the end of 2026 to early 2027.

Zelensky is also considering replacing his ambassador to the United States, with the current defense minister, Ruslan Umerov, being a potential candidate.

The funds allocated to Ukraine, which could be intended as a message to Russia, are intended to ensure access to medical, humanitarian, and administrative services in Ukrainian communities, and to restore critical transport infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and logistics centers in regions with high traffic.

The European Investment Bank has financed the repair of supply roads for Ukrainian communities, to the tune of 134 million euros. These funds will be used to restore critical transport infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and logistics centers in regions with high traffic.

In conclusion, the Skynex air defense system is currently regarded as a highly effective tool for Ukraine in countering Russian drone threats, with its performance validated in actual combat and ongoing support from Germany confirming its value on the battlefield. The ongoing support from Germany and the development of indigenous defense systems in Ukraine bode well for Ukraine's ability to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression.

The Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani suggests that a withdrawal from the war by Russia could potentially become a social problem due to the high salaries of soldiers. As a response to the Russian drone threats, Ukraine's community policy might need to address the acquisition and implementation of effective defense systems, such as the German-made Skynex air defense policy, which has demonstrated high effectiveness against Russian unmanned aerial vehicles.
